Hawaii – for the young and young at heart

Things to do

The Big Island of Hawaii has something for everyone – from little keiki (children) to kupuna (seniors). Here are some of our favorite things to do, whether you’re bringing the kids or just want to act like one yourself.

All-ages activities on Hawaii’s Big Island

Slurp a shave ice. The really good ones have ice so finely shaved, it is almost creamy. Try the flavors made with real fruit – it’s healthier and fresher. (And it’s even better with a scoop of locally made ice cream inside!) Our favorites are Scandinavian Shave Ice in Kona, Anuenue in Kawaihae, and the Original Big Island Shave Ice Co., which travels around the island.

Rent a convertible (or better yet, a bicycle!) and feel the wind on your face as you cruise around the island. Check out Bikeworks Beach and Sport in Waikoloa Beach Resort for bike rentals.

Make a black or green sandcastle. Here on the Big Island, you can not only play in beautiful white sand, but there are exotic black and green sand beaches as well, a result of the amazing volcanic activity that shaped our island. Be sure to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to learn more about Hawaii’s volcanic history.

Watch the stars. On the Big Island, you can travel to the world’s largest sea mountain (Mauna Kea), where some of the world’s foremost observatories study the night sky. But you don’t have to go that far to enjoy the stars. With very little light pollution on the Big Island, you can appreciate the amazing expanse of constellations with the naked eye right from your own backyard.
