Go snorkeling
Here along the Kohala Coast, just north of Kailua-Kona, you can rent snorkel gear and journey out right from the beach. “Snorkel Hawaii: The Big Island Guide to the Beaches and Snorkeling of Hawaii” is an excellent resource for snorkelers and beachgoers alike.
It’s also fun to take a snorkel cruise, which gets you off the beaten path (and usually includes lunch!). On a cruise, you’ll likely see fun-loving pods of dolphins, as well as humpback whales, which visit us in the winter months, most often November through March.
World-famous scuba diving
Hawaii is also world-famous for scuba diving, and there are options for all levels. Most operators offer “discover scuba diving” options for beginners, and there are lots of dive charter options for certified divers.
For the adventure of a lifetime, consider a manta ray night dive to experience these gentle giants up close. Most of the trips head out to the dive site right before sunset. The operators set up an underwater “campfire,” which attracts the mantas, who swoop above you sometimes just inches away! Not a diver? Not a problem – most operators offer manta snorkel options on the same trip.
