Experience the flavors of Hawaii

Things to do

During your time in Hawaii, you are likely to see some unfamiliar things on menus and experience island flavors very different from what you find at home. Hawaii truly is a melting pot of different cultures, and one of the best ways to experience this diversity is through food.

Start your day the Hawaiian way

For breakfast, consider trying a loco moco (a dish reportedly created in Hilo, featuring white rice, topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg and brown gravy) and a glass of P.O.G. (passion, orange, guava juice).

Lunch like a local

At lunch time, order up a plate lunch, which typically comes with “two scoop white rice,” mac (macaroni) salad, and an entrĂ©e like teriyaki beef, fresh island fish or kālua pork (kālua is a traditional Hawaiian cooking method utilizing an imu, a type of underground oven).

Need an afternoon pick-me-up?

Try a musubi, a Japanese-inspired snack made of a slice of grilled Spam on top of a block of rice, often sprinkled with furikake (a dry seasoning), and wrapped together with nori (a dried sheet of edible seaweed).

Dinner
 and don’t forget dessert!

For dinner, sushi fans will want to try Hawaiian poke, which is diced, raw fish tossed with a variety of savory seasonings.

And don’t forget dessert! Two of our favorites are Hawaiian shave ice (finely shaved ice formed into a ball, topped with a variety of island-inspired flavors and served in a paper cone or bowl) and malasadas, a Portuguese-style doughnut coated with sugar and often filled with flavored cream or fruit fillings.
