Our favorite picks for family fun on the Big Island of Hawaii

Things to do

The Big Island of Hawaii is a wonderful destination for a family vacation, with lots of family-friendly places and things to do. After the beach, here are some of our favorite activities for family fun!

Go wild at Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo

With free admission, beautiful landscaping, diverse animals and a cool playground, Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens in Hilo is near the top of our list for outings with the keiki (children). This 12-acre zoo is the only naturally occurring tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. It is home to more than 80 animal species including two Bengal Tigers, plus several endemic, endangered animals.

Play at Mauna Kea Recreation Area

The new playground at Mauna Kea Recreation Area is a great place to stop, stretch your legs and enjoy the view on your way to the Mauna Kea Visitors Center or if you’re traveling between Hilo and Kona over Saddle Road. There’s also picnic areas, a walking path with exercise equipment, and restrooms.

Explore and learn at Mokupāpapa Discovery Center

The Mokupāpapa Discovery Center in Hilo offers the perfect combination of education and entertainment. The center features a 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium, interactive educational exhibits, and life-size models of wildlife found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands!

Indoor options for rainy days (there aren’t many!)

On the off chance the weather is bad in Waikoloa, consider a movie at the brand new cinemas, where you can enjoy lunch or dinner while you watch the show from your luxurious seat. Or sample some delicious mac nuts, brittle and popcorn, and discover how mac nuts are grown and processed at the “Nut House.”
