One of our favorite ways to celebrate is by staying at one of our vacation rentals in Waikoloa Beach Resort, which is a hub for Independence Day activities. Each year, the resort (aptly called the “gathering place of the Kohala Coast”) hosts a free, family-friendly concert at its gorgeous Waikoloa Bowl outdoor venue. This year’s show featured entertainment by Lucky Tongue and Johnny Shot Band. We like to bring blankets and beach chairs and set up on the lush, grassy slope with perfect view of the stage – there isn’t a bad seat in the house, and there’s plenty of room to dance!

The next-door Queen’s Marketplace and Kings’ Shops offer a wide range of food options, from quick and simple to fine, sit-down dining. The event culminates with a spectacular firework display that can be seen all along the Kohala coastline!

Fourth of July fundraiser

Another Fourth of July favorite is the Great Waikoloa Rubber Duckie Race, benefitting the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii. It’s so much fun to cheer on the giant raft of rubber ducks as they move across the Kings’ Shop lake. The first 50 ducks – plus the last duck – to cross the finish line win prizes, including hotel stays, trips, boat cruises, helicopter tours and more.
